Avoid Agencies Collecting Bad Debt

By Pamela Chiacchiaro

It really is no shocker that when you fail to repay all of your debt, debt collectors will come after you. They are not looking to harm you in any way, but merely retrieve owed debt to another person or business. The sole duty of a collection agency is to contact the debtor and collecting bad debt immediately while at the same time maintaining integrity and respecting privacy laws.

I read this interesting article recently about the truth behind debt collectors and their tactics, and thought it would be important to share here. It is called the "8 things debt collectors won't say" and the first thing it mentions is the fact that threatening calls made by collectors are entirely empty. In other words, if a collector threatens to list you as "refusal to pay," they are lying. Your creditor already knows that you cannot pay which is why they turned to the agency in the first place. The article calls this "reverse psychology."

he article goes on to talk about how debt collectors are not allowed to contact you during work once you tell them to stop. According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, collectors must cease contact once you tell them to stop, otherwise they are in direct violation. Additionally, collectors are not able to discuss your debt with other people, unless it is you, your attorney, spouse, or co-signer. This is for confidentiality reasons because your debt is really no one else's business but your own.

The article also reminds us that collection agencies like Rapid Recovery Solution are businesses and need to make money in order to survive. Not all agencies employ ruthless tactics in order to retrieve money and are oftentimes pressured to get the job done by the company who hired them. It is also important to remember that while it is a good idea to pay back your owed debt to the agencies, it will not necessarily bring up your credit score. It just does not work like that.

Before you begin paying a debt agency, make sure that you owe the money in the first place. Also, make sure to do some research and learn the laws involved in debt collection. It is wise to keep yourself as educated as possible when it comes to your money, your rights, and your life.
