DUI Insurance Is Also Known As SR-22 Coverage

By Christina Potter

DUI insurance is a special type of coverage that is offered to individuals that have been convicted of a criminal offense in California. Driving under the influence, which is the full term for the acronym DUI is a serious offense. Individuals that are charged with this offense will generally have their license privileges suspended, and also be forced to carry a different type of insurance coverage as a result.

Coverage for individuals who have been convicted of a DUI crime is often times referred to as SR-22 coverage. SR-22 coverage is offered by many different types of insurers, but usually comes at a higher price than a traditional policy. The motor vehicle department will not lift the restrictions on a convicted driver's license, until they have obtained this type of coverage.

After the coverage has been obtained, the company who has given you the coverage you require, will mail a copy of your policy to the motor vehicle department. SR-22 coverage is different from other types of coverage, because it tells the motor vehicle department and the insurer that you are an at risk driver. You will need to render more money for one of these types of policies.

Aside from having to pay more money for this type of policy, there are other restrictions you must meet as well. In the event that you allow the policy to lapse, due to non-payment, your license can be suspended again and new criminal charges can go against you. The motor vehicle department will not inform you of the change if your policy lapses, because it is your responsibility to ensure that your policy is paid on time.

One thing a driver must do if they are forced to maintain this type of coverage is ensure that the coverage never lapses. The coverage can lapse as a result of non-payment, or for other types of issues. In the event that the coverage lapses due to non-payment the driver can be subjected to additional fines, and have their license taken away from them again.

Almost every major insurer offers SR-22 coverage to high risk drivers, such as offenders or risky drivers in general. Prior to obtaining this type of coverage, you need to speak with the motor vehicles department to determine if there are any other requirements you must meet before your driving privileges are reinstated. Be prepared to remain on the coverage for a set amount of years that will be designated by the motor vehicles department.

Obtaining a DUI insurance policy is not difficult to do, because larger insurers offer this additional coverage. To help you save some money on the coverage, you should shop around for quotes. As long as you have done everything that the motor vehicle department instructs that you do, your driving privileges should be reinstated with this additional coverage.
