Join Arts For All Omaha

By Lana Bray

Arts For All Omaha is a non-profit organization. Educating families and individuals in different types of art is their main goal. Several classes are offered to the public. Music, performing, communication, and visual arts are the main core of AFA. Studies are made available to everyone who has in interest in them. Open to all ages, it is perfect for anyone.

This was started in 2006. It is open all year round. Studies are conveniently done in semester segments. Weekly classes serve thousands of students and families each year. Facilities used are donated by the community and are scattered throughout the area. The different locations offer less travel for many, making it easier to attend.

As with other programs and organizations, some fees are required for certain courses. These fees are minimal and help cover the costs of supplies and expenses. AFA offers various forms of financial assistance for those who cannot afford this. Qualified individuals and families can take advantage of discounts and scholarships that are offered. A sliding scale is also used to help low income families to participate in their area of interest. All courses of study are kept affordable and some classes are free of charge. Everyone is welcome. No one is turned away.

Curriculum is planned in advance paying close attention to age related topics. Activities range from young children to adults. Some of these are designed for parents and children to work together in a setting. Other programs are age specific or geared toward individuals. There are also classes that require a certain skill level to enroll. Requirements and information on courses is made available prior to registering for classes.

A wide variety of arts is available. Courses are structured for the beginner and advanced, from preschool to adults. Painting, dance and sculpture are examples of courses a person may choose from to study. Instruction on musical instruments such as piano, drums and guitar is also available. Comic book illustration, photography and various forms of writing are just a few more options for interested individuals. Group and individual instruction varies on what type of program you are entering.

Structured activities with adult supervision can be found in after school programs. These are offered at three different schools, Western Hills Magnet, Castelar Elementary and Crestridge International Magnet Center. Drama, photography, pottery, and ballet are offered in addition to many other programs. Early childhood music and art is free of charge at Open Door Mission/Lydia House. This is open to everyone.

Special courses and camps are available through the summer months. Camps are designed for students to learn through fun activities. These can last from one to six weeks in length. Locations are spread through the local area making it convenient for family travel. All ages are encouraged to join. Information on activities can be found on their website or by calling the office.

Arts For All Omaha is always expanding and exploring new opportunities for the community. Several workshops are being developed for local groups and organizations. AFA works closely with their public schools, Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging and Omaha Homeschool Learning Center. They are hoping to discover new locations to branch out their services to accommodate more people. Their primary purpose is to bring art appreciation and education to everyone.
