Tips To Become An Excellent Accounting Expert Witness

By Lila Barry

There are a lot of professionals who are interested in becoming an accounting expert witness. In order to become a good one in this job, there are some tips that the person will have to deal with. Following these tips should allow the person to provide a concise and objective testimony in a court of law.

Those professionals who are going to provide a testimony during a trial should make sure to use visual aids. This is because it makes it easier to present sophisticated accounting matters during this time. The person should utilize a graph, chart, or other illustrations to do this. It might be helpful to have written notes as well.

In such cases, the person might want to watch out what he or she says. This also means that the person should avoid answering those ambiguous questions. One might be unable to respond to questions. If this is the case, the person should say so. It is also fine to ask for clarifications to deal with the questions properly.

Be sure to keep one's composure. There is nothing that can be gained from getting pretty worked up over some things that the other party says. When the person loses composure, it is actually easier for the other party to discredit whatever testimony made on court. It will actually put on a detrimental impact on the said case.

Be patient. There are times when the said trial will not go as planned. At times, one will have to put up with motions, delays, recesses, and even sidebars. The person might end up getting frustrated. Do not allow this to affect the person's composure. While at the stand, the person should have a calm and cool demeanor even if there is a chaotic or turbulent scene unfolding in front of him.

Be humorous. However, one's sense of humor should be exposed when the time is right. It should be well-timed, just when the situation is right. The person should show his humor to come off as natural and spontaneous. Make sure that the joke one cracks will not be cruel or look like it is forced. It will put the case at a disadvantage if one makes a bad impression.

Know the limitations that a person can deal with. If the person does not know the answer to the questions at hand, do not try to bluff his way out. While the person might be an expert in this field, there are also experts on the opposing team who can refute or validate the testimony made on the stand. They also know more of the things that the person, as an expert, knows about.

It is also for the best that the person does not become argumentative. Do not become defensive as well. This will only end up with him showing negative behavior. It is best to avoid showing such behavior in front of the crowd, especially when the opponent is starting to get the upper hand. Stay as calm and clear-headed as possible.

The accounting expert witness should never forget who is the one deciding the case. As this is the case, the person should make sure to direct the replies to queries and such to the jury and the judge. Speak to these people to get them to understand and accept the testimony on the person's professionalism.
